UK-based, Eastern Europe-focused JKX Oil & Gas announced on Monday that it has commenced arbitration proceedings in The Hague against Ukraine for losses stemming from treaty violations and was seeking $180 million in compensation. The move reflects the growing frustration on the part of Ukraine's independent gas producers with the government, which said last year that a steep royalty increase -- from 28% to 55% on production up to 5,000 meters -- would be a temporary measure. In December, however, Kiev extended the royalty throughout 2015 while also imposing sales restrictions on the domestic market.
