Australian LNG project operators concede that they could have done much differently to avoid the cost overruns that have beset their industry over recent years. Speaking to the LNG 18 conference in Australia, Chevron's head of Australian operations, Roy Krzywosinski, told delegates that if the company had to do it over again, it would have done more "front-end" work on the $54 billion Gorgon project ahead of making a final investment decision to proceed. He said Chevron should have done additional work on understanding the engineering and logistics involved, from all the component parts, to how to get them on site on remote Barrow Island. In the end the project went massively over budget and started late, and is now shut down due to a mechanical issue (IOD Apr.4'16).
