According to Intrexon Energy senior VP Bob Walsh, the US synthetic biology technology company has started up a pilot plant in California to continue developing a process to make isobutanol from methane using genetically modified bacteria called methanotrophs. Mr. Walsh said that the process is similar conventional ethanol production methods, which "use sugars from agricultural crops as feedstock for ethanol-producing microbes such as yeast...but the feedstock is methane instead of biomass." The isobutanol produced by the fermentation process, he said, is like ethanol a suitable gasoline blendstock, burning cleanly with 98% of the energy density of gasoline and able to be blended at up to 16% without modifying vehicles.
