Arrium has begun preparations to place its integrated Whyalla works and magnetite ore-based supply chaininto care and maintenance if the operation's cash losses cannot be halted. Planning work is due to becompleted by mid-2016The option comes about after Whyalla posted an operating loss of A$43 M (US$30.7 M, ?27.5 M), includingA$24 M of capital expenditure, in fiscal H1 December. The deficit was mainly due to low Asian steel pricesand fixed iron ore feed costs, the company said.
