This mini-symposium of Current Diagnostic Pathology is devoted to aspects of perinatal and infant pathology. The six authors provide well-illustrated and well-referenced reviews of topics that are relevant to the practice of specialist and general pathologists, as well as offering direction to trainees. Although many surgical specimens from infants are examined in specialist units, this is not always the case; initial investigations may be carried out in the hospital of delivery or first admission. Similarly, there has been a trend in recent years for infants to be transferred for necropsy to paediatric pathology departments for examination, but in many countries, including parts of the UK, there are not enough specialist pathologists to cover all areas. A common theme in these reviews is appropriate specimen collection and handling at the time of initial examination.
