US Gulf of Mexico explorers submitted some $159.4 million in high bids in the latest federal lease sale that featured surprising levels of activity from companies like BHP and Occidental Petroleum. BHP and the company still participating under the Anadarko Petroleum name were the two highest bidders in terms of dollars committed at the biannual auction of acreage in what regulators called the “crown jewel” of the US offshore. The two were also among the top five companies in total bids submitted (see table).
