Chevron has emerged as the most recent Western major to throw in the towel in the high-potential, but environmentally sensitive, offshore Great Australian Bight, less than one year after it reiterated its commitment to a deepwater drilling campaign in South Australia (IOD Nov.21’16). "While the Great Australian Bight is one of Australia’s most prospective frontier hydrocarbon regions, in the current low oil price environment it was not able to compete for capital in Chevron’s global portfolio,” Chevron Australia said in a statement Friday. The decision was commercial, it added, and not due to government policy, regulatory, community or environmental concerns.
