The effect of replacing regular wheat chapatti with multigrain chapatti (finger millet (Eleusine coracana) and wheat in 30:70 ratio) on the blood glucose level of 13 diabetics living in different rural and urban locations in India was investigated during December 2007-January 2008. The t-test statistics was applied to analyse the observations. Three distinct groups with different glucose levels were found: high (>400 mg/dl), moderate (200-400 mg/dl) and low (<200 mg/dl). The results showed that the blood glucose level of subjects in the high glucose group was lowered by continuous consumption of multigrain chapatti. All subjects who consumed the multigrain chapatti had a considerable decrease of blood glucose level. Two subjects either stopped antidiabetic medicines or reduced to 50% of the prescribe dosage. The moderate glucose group showed a decreasing trend up to 98% during the treatment. High blood glucose levels were controlled after multigrain chapatti replaced wheat chapatti. The moderate glucose group showed drastic lowering of blood glucose levels, while the low glucose group also showed reduction in the blood glucose level. It is concluded that diabetes can be managed by finger millet.
