Singapore—Japan’s JFE Steel plans to permanently shut several plants at Keihin and Chiba districts as early as March 2020 to March 2023 as part of plans to increase its competitiveness, parent JFE Holdings said late Wednesday . In explaining its decision further, the parent company said: “Exports and production are getting weaker amid the global economic slowdown,” and local inventory of steel “remains high.” The two districts form the steelmaker’s East Japan Works, which have a combined crude steel production capacity of 8 million mt/year.
