The purpose of this study in the September 2012 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise was to determine whether agreement exists between two methods of identifying acute impairment following concussion (2). The two methods the authors evaluated were baseline comparison where the postconcussion scores are compared with individualized scores and normative comparison where the postconcussion scores are compared with gender-specific normative means. Utilizing data derived from an ongoing clinical program that included baseline testing of 1,060 collegiate student athletes, gender-specific normative means were obtained from a subset of 673 athletes with no history of self-reported concussion, learning disabilities, or attention deficit disorders. Over the 10-year course of the study, 258 athletes who had completed baseline testing were then diagnosed with concussions.
