The Indo-French workshop brought together accelerator physicists and usersfrom the CLIO (Collaboration for an Infrared FEL at Orsay) Free-Electron Laser(FEL) in Orsay, France, accelerator physicists from the Compact Ultrafast Terahertz FEL (CUTE-FEL), and the latter'spotential users in India. CLIO is an infrared FEL facility that has been operatingfor the last fifteen years at wavelengthsfrom 3 to 100 murn. The CUTE-FEL is aterahertz FEL that is being built at theRaja Ramanna Centre for AdvancedTechnology. Ten scientists from Franceand twenty scientists and two studentsfrom India attended the workshop.The workshop commenced with introductory remarks by Shiva Prasad, Directorof IFCPAR, who welcomed the participants and briefed them on the objectivesof the Centre. J.-M. Ortega then spoke onthe CLIO FEL, emphasizing the uniquefeatures of the FEL-broadly tunablespectral range, appropriate pulse structureof picosecond pulses at MHz repetitionrate, and high peak and average power(around 10 MW and 10 W respectively).He also pointed out the importance ofvalue-addition to the facility by providing conventional lasers that are synchronized to the FEL pulses. S. Krishnagopaldescribed the parameters of the CUTE-FEL being developed in India, and briefedthe participants on the present status ofactivities. He emphasized the fact that amajor part of the effort has been in thedevelopment of the technology of thelinear accelerator and undulator that arepart of the FEL. A standing-wave PlaneWave Transformer (PWT) linac has beendeveloped, only the second in the world,and a 10 mA electron beam has been accelerated in this 21 cm long structure tc3.5 MeV, corresponding to an accelerating gradient of around 20 MV/m. A 5 cmperiod, 2.5 m long, planar undulator, us-ing NdFeB magnets, has also been builand characterized. The remaining talkson the first day were devoted to furtherdetails of the two FELs. There were alsotalks from V. B. Asgekar on undulatordevelopment and Cherenkov FEL activities at Pune University, and from RaviKumar on FEL-related activities at theInstitute for Plasma Research.
