Diseases of the biliary tract and gallbladder present a unique set of clinical challenges to the practicing physician. In this volume, authorities in the field address selected topics related to biliary tract disease. Underlying most of the work presented is a rapidly improving understanding of biliary tract physiology and pathobiology. Advances in isolation techniques for bile duct epithelial cells (cholangiocytes) and bile duct units have accelerated progress in these areas. The isolation of functional isolated bile duct units from mouse liver [1] promises to be particularly useful in the study of the mechanisms of cholangiocyte transport in knockout-mouse models of disease (eg, cystic fibrosis).
