摘要

As Fiore et al. argue, adoption of the Joint Commission's measures for tobacco-use cessation would improve the health of the U.S. population. However, a greater opportunity exists. As was first shown in pediatrics, the hospitaliza-tion of a loved one creates a teachable moment for addressing tobacco use in family members.1'2 In many diagnoses, the admission may be related to, or the severity of illness may be worsened by, the patient's exposure to tobacco smoke. Addressing that issue eliminates continued toxic exposure in vulnerable persons and presents family members with an opportunity to quit using tobacco. Helping family members quit is also part of helping patients remain healthy after discharge.
