There is considerable evidence that a diet rich in polyunsaturatedfatty acids, especially omega-3 fatty acids derived from oily fish or nuts, is associated with reduced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and in particular a decrease in sudden cardiac death, although results of meta-analysis remain equivocal . Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this effect. Incorporation of fatty acids into myocardial membranes may influence ion channel function and reduce the risk of cardiac dysrhythmias . In addition, omega-3 fatty acids lower triglycerides, reduce platelet aggregation, and improve arterial endothelial function . Omega-3 fatty acids are also nutritional regulators of gene transcription, interacting with several different transcription factors to influence the expression of a range of genes, including genes involved in the regulation of inflammation and expression of adhesion molecules .
