This paper experimentally investigates the throughput performance of Variable Spreading Factor (VSF)-CDMA broadband wireless access in the reverse link multipath fading channel, employing the change of channel coding rate, R, and the number of multiplexed codes, C{sub}(max) according to the received signal energy per symbol-to-background noise spectrum density ratio (E{sub}s/N{sub}0) assuming QPSK data modulation. The experimental results demonstrated that in a multipath fading channel, up to six paths, VSF-CDMA increases the achievable throughput by increasing R and C{sub}(max) according to the increase in the average received E{sub}s/N{sub}0. Furthermore, we experimentally elucidated that the above 20 Mbps throughput is achieved using 40-MHz bandwidth at the average received E{sub}s/N{sub}0= 8.8 dB, by employing QPSK data modulation, R = 1/2 and C{sub}(max)=3 codes of the spreading factor SF = 4 in a four-path fading channel, where the spectrum efficiency corresponds to above 20 Mbps/ 40 MHz = 0.5 bits/Hz.
