摘要

Wheat production in Argentina is gathering pace. Our reporter there provides a unique insight into its market. Next year's Argentinian wheat harvest is expected to top 16m tonnes -- more than doubling production in just a few years. And if support for European farmers was dropped, Argentina could be a much stronger player in world cereals, says Omar Carulias, chief economist for the Bolsa de Cereales in Buenos Aires. The Bolsa, equivalent to the London Grain Exchange, trades around 25m tonnes of cereals and proteins a year, mainly wheat and soya. Around 25m tonnes of soya are produced a year in Argentina, a vast country, stretching more than 3,000km end to end. "We are expecting an increase in the total cereal and protein production for this year from 48m tonnes to at least 64," says Mr Carulias.
