Spring barley spots caused something of a controversy last year, but scientists are now unravelling the mystery. If you see spots developing on the top leaves of your spring barley crop just as the heads start to emerge, don't agonise about the cause--just get out the sprayer. HGCA-funded work shows that if you maintain green leaf area yields should not suffer. Dr Simon Oxley, of SAC, says that the spots, or necrotic lesions, may have two origins. "Some are caused by the fungus ramularia; others are physiological. The two may or may not be related," he explains. "There is a definite growth stage trigger for the appearance of spots," he adds. "At awns peeping, just at ear emergence, spots tend to appear on the top two leaves. Differences in the severity of spotting between varieties have also been observed," notes Dr Oxley.
