The French have always been revolutionary. No surprises, then, to see them embrace lo-till. Ploughing is just too expensive; I'm trying to kick the habit. Sounds familiar? But imagine these words said with a French accent. Min till tactics are not just a British craze, they're taking off across the Channel as well. Arnaud Vecten, who farms halfway between Calais and Paris, is ditching his plough in favour of a faster, less energy-hungry establishment system. Strict new labour legislation, limiting weekly hours to a maximum of 35, adds to the pressure to streamline operations. "When we plough, three of us have to split the day into three 8-hour shifts!" Five years ago when he first started experimenting with plough-less cultivation, Mr Vecten was apioneer. Now his neighbours are following his example.
