Scheduling your irrigation using a computer model is one way to make every drop count. Efficient use of water is now firmly on the UK agenda as agriculture competes with the demands of the domestic supply industry, leisure and other sectors to use this resource. Estimates vary as to how many farmers properly schedule their irrigation but it can be put as low as 50 percent for some crops such as potatoes. What is clear is that not all water applied for irrigation purposes is actually reaching its target. Research shows as much as 15-20 percent of water leaving the nozzle of rain guns never reaches the ground at which it is targeted. Soil variation and a multiplicity of local weather conditions make it difficult to plan irrigation in the UK by following guidelines based simply on past weather records. Basing irrigation applications on real-time information would in theory mean that growers have to keep accurate on-going records of their own fields each season. In practice, they are unable to do sowith accuracy or simply dislike the task of taking numerous measurements of soil moisture. The alternative is irrigation scheduling based on computer modelling.
