Growers need to focus on the potato processing market. UK consumers are eating more processed potatoes than ever before and within the next 18 months the amount of processed potatoes consumed will exceed packing ones, predicts the British Potato Council (BPC). Total UK potato consumption remains stable, but the dramatic change in consumption is speeding up. "Last year the increase in processed consumption was 15 percent, with fresh consumption decreasing by 8 percent," says BPC's Damian Baker. The processed market is diversifying as well as expanding. "It is no longer just about french fries," says Abbey Growers' Simon Bowen. Supermarkets are filled with new and successful potato products, such as baby roasts. They weren't on the shelves three years ago, but are now a 22,000t a year market.
