Successful businesses are well-focused businesses. They know that they can't be all things to all people. They decide how to serve a particular group of consumers, and then build and market a business to achieve these goals. It's called positioning. Frank Walton had an idea to bring low-cost shopping to small communities in the U.S. He formed Wal-Mart and developed the slogan "Always the Lowest Price - Always." By the time of his death he had developed Wal-Mart into the nation's largest retailer, knocking the retail giant Sears out of first place. He sold mostly American-made products. He was focused and knew his position in the market. He didn't try to compete with upscale department stores; he let others to fill this demand.
