Unilateral and inter-incompatibility in sour cherry cultivars

Self-, open- and cross-pollination of 40 Hungarian sour cherry [Prunus cerasus] varieties and hybrids were studied from 1968 to 1976 in Erd-Elvira, Hungary. Five further varieties were studied from 1988 to 1991 in Helvecia, Hungary. Self and cross-compatibility were estimated annually on 100-400 flowers per variety. Fruit set in self-pollinated and open-pollinated flowers depended on the weather, and therefore varied greatly. It was also observed that 98-99% of sour cherries were cross-compatible.In 5 cases between 1968 and 1976, inter-incompatibility was found. In each case, the female parent was Pandy meggy. According to the data from 1986 to 1991, 2 of 20 combinations showed unilateral incompatibility (Pandy meggy 7 X Debreceni botermo, Pandymeggy 7 X Kantorjanosi 1). Reciprocal incompatibility was found in the cross Pandy meggy 7 X Ujfehertoi furtos.
