As the 87th Acta year moves towards an end I am tempted to reflect on the journal's advance and aims: We started 2008 with a new cover design centered on women and families. This has proved appealing and has given the journal a fresh look, featuring a new picture each month of women and girls of all ages with their families, at work and at leisure, in happiness and in sorrow, as shown this month. Life is not plain sailing. Fondness, empathy and comfort are needed throughout life and in obstetrics and gynecology we are indeed aware of these requirements. Why not remind ourselves of that? It is also certain that smiles and laughter will follow and take us into a new year of hope.
