You can't plant a tree with a teaspoon. And you can't dig a post hole with a garden trowel. To get the job done right, your employees need the right tools. More than that, they need to know how to use them properly — and that involves training, maintenance and personal protection.According to Zachery Bruce, safety services manager with horticultural insurer Hortica, most accidents relating to hand tools and power equipment happen when the operator is hit by the tool or by flying objects: for example, when a chainsaw hits someone's leg — and they're not wearing safety chaps — or when debris flies into someone's eyes. And, depending on how long someone is operating the equipment, they could experience back stress or neck strain. How do you prevent these problems?"Make sure your people are properly trained and understand how to use equipment safely," says Bruce. "Also, make sure they wear personal protection equipment (PPE). The thing with PPE is that it's the last line of defense. It only works if someone is wearing it. We do a lot of inspections where we see people operating a trimmer who may not be wearing safety glasses."
