摘要

Brazil's oil sector has weathered the market fallout from Covid-19 better than its peers. But its prosperity hinges on the trajectory of Chinese demand and domestic regulatory changes. Brazil has been hit especially hard by the pandemic, with a caseload and death count that is third only to the US and India. President Jair Bolsonaro has sought to downplay the virus — an attitude that his critics say has aggravated the country's difculties. States were left to formulate restrictions individually, as Brazil initially took a piecemeal approach to combating Covid-19. State-controlled Petrobras' domestic fuel output was hit hard following the adoption of social-distancing measures in mid-March, which resulted in refnery utilisation rates falling to around 50pc. Yet its crude output has proved remark-ably resilient — buoyed by Chinese demand — and is running at around 3mn b/d.
