摘要

I had gone to Patagonia for spectacular mountain landscapes, to walk around Argentina's 3,375 m high FitzRoy Mountain and Chile's Torres Del Paine massif with its equally impressive 2,800 m granite Torres or towers and glaciers. I was not in Patagoniato see the flowers but the botanical references were distracting. When wandering Santiago's Cerro Santa Lucia Park I found an inscription commemorating the naturalist Charles Darwin's 1835 visit. My first destination, Argentina's FitzRoy Mountain was named after the HMS Beagle's Captain Robert FitzRoy in 1834. On the Beagle were Darwin and Conrad Martens, later of Sydney, the ship's artist. Illustrations of Chile's national flower Copihue or Chilean bellflower (Lapageria rosea), found growing along streams high on the Patagonian feldmark, were on matchboxes. I had to pass through the new Argentinian town, El Calafate named after Calafate (Berberis microphylla), a common plant with large purple berries and treacherous thorns which is used as an herb.
