This year the planets align for the 50th anniversary of the film release of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Directed and produced by the late Stanley Kubrick, 2001 is the director's first excursion into the genre of science fiction. This work belongs to an astonishingly diverse filmography that includes another futuristic work directed by Kubrick, A Clockwork Orange (1971). The screenplay for 2001 was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke and was inspired by Clarke's short story 'The Sentinel.' A novel with the same title as the film was written concurrently with the screenplay and was published after the film's release in April, 1968. While critics for the industry publication Variety were less than impressed, 2001 broke box office records, challenged cinematic form, and elevated the science fiction genre. The film garnered an Academy Award for Special Visual Effects, as well as nominations for Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Best Art Direction. Kubrick did not attend college, instead he refined his eye for visual imagery in a five-year run as a photographer for Look magazine – an apt preparation for his life-long passion for images and the dynamic possibilities of filmmaking.
