Thermal and Tensile Properties of PVA and Wood flour Composites

Polymer composites made from synthetic reinforcements are losing acceptability, due to their serious environmental concerns and high cost. The use of natural fibers such as wood flour, rice husk, straw, etc. gain interest for being non-toxic, light weight, reduced energy consumption and their environmental friendliness. In the present work, Poly(vinyl alcohol) [PVA] and wood flour composite films have been prepared by solvent casting method. Thermal analysis of the composite films has been studied at a heating rate of 10 °C min~(-1), from ambient temperature to 500 °C, in an inert atmosphere. Tensile properties of the composite films were measured with a Universal Testing Machine and the data was also subjected to One-Way ANOVA. Thermal stability of composite films were found to be enhanced upto a certain loading of wood flour, with the modest decrease in tensile strength. Scanning Electron Microscopy is used to study the morphology of the composite films.
