摘要

Midwives need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills developed through training to become autonomous and accountable practitioners at the point of registration (with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in the UK). As such, the NMC have been consulting with midwives, students, other health and social care professionals and members of the public on what midwives of the future need to know and be capable of providing to ensurethey are equipped to practise safely. The consultation is based around the draft standards of education for student midwives. This is a broad scope, encompassing today's needs and demands within the ever-changing field of midwifery. Should midwives be 'all singing, all dancing' practitioners, or are midwives drawn to certain specialities where they can excel and become experts in their chosen field? The Hot Topic in this edition discusses these different themes and provokes thought and debate around what midwifery and maternity care may mean to different individuals. You may or may not agree with some of the ideas, but it will certainly give food for thought!
