Liquid crystalline dimers and bimesogens, although known for some time, have experienced resurgence of late due to the propensity of these materials to exhibit spontaneously chiral nematic-like phases with nanoscalemodulated structures. The publication of Liquid Crystal Dimers - by Santanu Kumar Pal and Sandeep Kumar - therefore appears to be timely. After a brief of introductions to the basics of liquid crystal science the book presents a basic introduction to several subdivisions of liquid crystal (LC) dimer (calamitic-dimers, discotic-dimers, bent-core-dimers). Just as these subdivisions have attracted varying levels of research attention, Liquid Crystal Dimers devotes a far larger number of words to the subject of calamitic- and discotic- dimers than to cholesteric or bent-core materials, before concluding with a short perspectives chapter which suggests a few avenues for possible applications of these materials.
