The origin of helical structures especially in achiral liquid crystals is a topic of debate. Understanding the origin of submicron helical structures becomes particularly challenging in liquid crystal phases such as nematic and blue phases. These phases show uniform electron density whereas, probing submicron structures by techniques such as X-ray diffraction rely on density modulations. Salamonczyk et al. in their recent paper have carried out resonant soft X-ray scattering to investigate the internal helical structures of twist-bend nematic and blue phases. Both the phases have twist coming either from molecular chirality or caused by molecular geometry. The studies suggest that twist-bend nematic phase has a structure with a double-helix built of two interlocked helices and confirm that the helical pitch is of the order of 10 nm.
