The IEC published a briefing paper on 4 October 2019 entitled “The IECEE – taking conformity assessment further”1 which explains the role of this organisation in the world of product conformity. The paper starts by looking at the reasons for conformity assessment – safety, quality, interoperability and consistency. It then discusses the types of assessment – first party is when the manufacturers evaluate their own products, second party is when the companies buying the product perform their own product evaluations and third party is when independent parties carry out product evaluation and testing.
