The North East YPN celebrates and embraces the cultural heritage of Northumberland,Newcastle-upon-Tyne,County Durham and Teesside.This region has a strong industrial heritage,focused around the coal mining and ship building industries.In the early 20th century,Northumberland and County Durham produced around 20-25% of UK coal output and the Tyne and Wear dockyards were industrial powerhouses,with more than 30 active shipyards.Alternative industries had to be sought after the gradual decline and eventual demise of these two big industries in the late 20th century.Teesside hosts Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station and has become synonymous with the petrochemical industry.The seaside town of Blyth became home to the first offshore wind farm in the UK in 2000 when the region's Offshore Renewable Energy(ORE)Catapult centre installed two 2 MW pilot turbines off the coast.
