In January 2013, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) "identified for certain crops high acute risks for bees" from the use of pesticides containing 3 neonicotinoids (1). As a result of this report, the European Commission suspended the use of these 3 neonicotinoids on crops considered the most attractive to bees for a 2-year period, beginning in December 2013 (1). Yet the pesticide industry had lobbied vigorously against a ban on neonicotinoids.
