摘要

In the UK BMI data from the National Childhood Measurement Programme is widely used to plan NHS health-weight services and interventions. Although special school participation is encouraged, technical difficulties and constrained resources mean that special schools are significantly under-represented. The data gathered from the few schools that do participate is not included in national analysis on the grounds that it is unrepresentative.1 It is well attested in the international literature that children (and adults) with disabilities experience significantly higher rates of obesity and these findings have been replicated in two British studies comparing students from special and mainstream education. This vulnerable population has a disproportionately high requirement for NHS healthy-weight services whose development is exclusively informed by data from mainstream schoolchildren. Working with the European Centre for the Environment and Human Health we intend to collect BMI data for every child in Cornish Special Schooling to provide the first British epidemiological survey in this field. The measurements will be augmented by qualitative data from parental focus groups exploring perceptions of obesity, influencing factors and the efficacy of local services. Internationally we feel a greater emphasis needs to be placed on understanding the nature of the relationship between disability and obesity backed up by high-quality, representative data. Our work will provide a unique insight that stands to deliver national benefit as well as informing local policymakers and influencing the agenda for children with disabil-ities. We hope to see more work in this overlooked area in the near-future.
