While the autonomous shipping sector is still in the early stages of its development, industry experts see strong potential, particularly when it comes to reducing costs and improving safety. However, there is likely to be a combination of manned and unmanned elements for some time to come. The past few years have seen a number of new concepts and business ventures launched in the autonomous shipping domain. In April, Norwegian maritime operations specialist Wilhelmsen and technology systems and solutions provider Kongsberg established a JV called Massterly, which describes itself as 'the world's first autonomous shipping company... offering a complete value chain for autonomous ships, from design and development to control systems, logistics services and vessel operations'.
