A Commission proposal for EU agriculture ministers to approve Syngenta's genetically modified Bt 11 maize has been postponed until further discussions can be held.These will probably take place at the Commission College on January 28th.On December 8th,the Commission forced a vote on the approval of the insect-resistant maize by the Scientific Committee on Food Safety and Animal Health,but was unable to achieve a qualified majority in favour of registration(Agrow No 438,p 9).This meant that the moratorium on GMO approvals remained intact and that the Commission had to refer the matter to the Council of Ministers in the form of a proposal.
