In the first of our articles marking its centenary, Sir Harry Studholme, Chair of the Forestry Commission, reflects on the past, present and future of the FC's role.What a time to be celebrating one hundred years of forestry. Timber prices are the best they have been for 30 years, more is known about trees and woods than at any time in history and there is political and public interest in planting trees. Yet in so many ways our forests have never been more threatened, with the voices of foresters lost in the public rhetoric. Looking back 100 years to just after the Great War ended there seems an enviable clarity of enthusiasm for the dividends of peace, including the vision to reverse millennia-old deforestation through Government support for large-scale forest creation, to growtimber and support the rural economy.
