摘要

Patient education is an essential component of asthma treatment and management and is advocated by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Expert Panel Report 3 (EPR3): Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma} Patients diagnosed with asthma are often faced with having to integrate multifaceted treatment regimens and environmental control measures into their already busy lives. Self-management education provides patients with the information necessary to successfully manage their chronic illness at home. To effectively provide self-management education, the asthma educator must form a partnership with the patient and family-taking factors such as cultural variations and literacy levels into consideration. The ultimate goal of self-management education is to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with asthma and to improve quality of life. According to the EPR3, self-management education should include teaching patients and families:
