Jones: It is critical to initially identify any literacy, cultural and socioeconomic barriers to successful self-management. Find out what having asthma and allergies means to them. This would be the beginning of building trust and finding a common language with which to communicate. Mallam: My first step when initiating education begins the moment I meet the patient/family. Establishing trust and mutual respect, allowing them the opportunity to share their concerns in a safe, nonjudgmental environment goes a long way as I initiate asthma/allergy education. In our practice, the physician and I work as a team with the patient/family, discussing and developing a treatment plan together. This provides me the opportunity to assess the patients' readiness and their confidence to learn to self-manage their asthma. When I begin, I first give them a chance to "take a breath"; acknowledging this can be very overwhelming. I start by asking what questions or concerns they might have at this point, acknowledging they may have questions after leaving the office. They are encouraged to contact me. My education begins with simplifying what has been discussed, focusing on what asthma is. Asking the patient/family questions gives me a clue of what they already understand.
