摘要

A plethora of chemicals, both naturally occurring and artificially synthesized, can induce changes in the nervous system. Since prehistoric times, many have been used as ingredients in medicines and hunting poisons and have even served occasional odd functions such as determining innocence in a legal dispute (Daniell & Latham, 1848). Finding ways to treat neuromuscular, neurodegenerative, and psychiatric disorders has relied heavily on screening for drugs acting on the nervous system. Many scientists have devoted their lives to discovering new compounds and ascertaining their effects. Along these lines, some of the world's greatest discoveries have been made by accident, but so have some of its worst. We find an interesting case of the latter with Gerhard Schrader (1903-1990) and Interessen-Gemeinschaft Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft in Leverkusen (I. G. Farben).
