A mining technique that offers the prospect of reducing the pay limits of mineable ore to nearly half the present values, that reduces underground losses of gold, that improves seismicity and offers better roof support A hoisting system with no limit on the depth of operation, that reduces the power consumption by 25 per cent, and that can be made locally A method of looking forward into rock to obtain a picture of what occurs beyond the stope face A computer model for a mining operation that can pinpoint areas of cost saving and productivity improvement ready for the PC on the mine manager's desk. These are the dreams of any South African gold miner. However, they are not just dreams but innovative concepts that are excitingly close to reality. If successful, they could increase the reserves of mineable ore very significantly, both at existing levels and below 4000 metres.
