The effects on humus of applying 3 t semi-rotted manures/ha and small amounts of mineral fertilizers to a moderately deep, clay loam leached chernozem in the southern forest steppe of Western Siberia was investigated between 1970-93. Quantities of soil organic matter in the plough layer (0-20 cm) increased by an average of 35.2% over the entire period, as compared with control plots. Positive effects of amendments on humus content began to be seen after the second of 4 repetitions of a 6-year croprotation (1 year fallow, 6 years wheat), with humus content of the plough layer increasing by 0.26-0.33%, depending on amounts of N fertilizers used. The humus content of the sub-plough layer (20-40 cm) also increased by 0.12-0.36% after the second repetition of the 6-year crop rotation, compared with control plots. Humus composition also improved, with contents of humic acids increasing by 0.24-0.39% after the second repetition of the 6-year crop rotation. Contents of fulvic acids and non-hydrolysed residues remained unchanged. Composition of humic acids also changed, with an increase in contents of humic acids bound to calcium and sesquioxides.
