Roses continue to be among the most popular ornamentals throughout the US, with many new types introduced annually. They are no longer just hybrid teas pursued by rosarians. Unfortunately, roses also continue to suffer from a number of serious diseases, including downy mildew, rust, powdery mildew and black spot. Over the past year, we at Chase Horticultural Research Inc., Mount Aukum, CA, have been conducting field trials in the Central Valley of California where many of the roses are produced for the US market. We had a chance to complete one trial each on rust, black spot, pow-derv mildew and downv mildew.
