Just two blocks from the hubbub of downtown Bethes-da, MD, near Washington, DC, is Glenbrook Road — aptly named for the stream that runs through many of its front yards. In 2003, attracted by the stream and the proximity to Bethesda's center, Robyn and Bill Collins bought a 1-acre lot in the neighborhood. While building their new house, they learned the reason why the stream is always flowing: Much of the neighborhood sits on an unusually high water table. A huge dry well foundation for the house enabled them to build as planned, but the challenge for the landscape was clear.
