How low can things go? The recent trend toward small plants and small gardens is a strong one, but we may have gotten sold short. The public has been force-fed a steady diet of pixie plants for one good reason: A lot more tiny plants fit on a shippingrack. Marketing experts tried to rationalize this economic reality by arguing that gardens are growing smaller, anyway. But, the truth is: Bigger perennials are just as garden-worthy as their shorter brethren. Statuesque perennials make an eye-catching, bold, structural statement that compact plants cannot. You don't have to be held hostage to munchkin plants. Here are some perennials and an ornamental grass that you can really look up to.
