From 1993 to 1996, we investigated the population ecology of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, in the Sagami River running through the central Kanagawa Prefecture, laying emphasis on thier anadoromous migration. Generally, peak migration occurred in April, and the movement of anadromous population during the season seemed to be related to the phases of the moon. Nearly every year, the dominant migratory activity was observed corresponding to the half moon i.e the first or the last quarter of the moon. Another interesting result was an apparent correlation (r- 0.824) between catches of marine-life juveniles and anadromous population size in the same year. A higher correlation (r = 0.971) was obtained except the years with poor water inflow (less than 10 t/s in average) during the months from February to April. It also suggests a strong relationship between anadromous activity and water inflow of the Sagami River. Regarding catadromous population, the size of this larval population during a given year could be correlative to both the catches of marine-life juveniles (r >0.651) and anadromous population size r = 0.668) in the next year, even if no high correlation was indicated (p <0.1).
