By focusing the attention to the bast fibers of kenaf plants (non-wood vegetable resources having greater strength and length than general wood fibers), fiber-oriented kenaf boards with excellent properties have been developed by mechanically orienting fibers using a unique orientation method which takes advantage of the kenaf bast fiber's features. The pressed kenaf boards with highly oriented bast fibers, the type impossible to produce with conventional technology, provide great strength and dimensional stability against moisture and can thus be applicable to flooring and structural members. The pressed boards made from crushed particles of heartwood of the same plant has good heat insulation and sound absorbing characteristics applicable to doors and furniture, while kenaf composite boards, with two types of lamination, are lightweight yet rigid, potentially usable as an alternative to plywood.
