Why the Mourning Dove survived and the Passenger Pigeon did not. The orange sky was streaked with birds, each a bullet-like missile headed for a large spruce thicket along the Susque-hanna River in Pennsylvania, The seemingly endless flight of doves darting, diving, and swooping across the sky that evening in September made me wonder what it must have been like 200 years ago when Passenger Pigeons made their legendary flights across the same skies. In the autumn of 1813, John James Audubon observed aflight of Passenger Pigeons along the Ohio River in Kentucky that was so dense "the light of the noonday sun was obscured as by an eclipse."
