LCI Analysis of Recycled Information Paper According to the Brightness Grade

LCI (Life Cycle Inventory) analysis was conducted for information paper made of 100% recycled pulp to find the effects of the brightness grade on the environmental load of the paper. The system boundary includes used-paper collecting, synthesis of chemicals production, paper-making, distribution, consumption, refuse recovery, incineration and land fill. CO_2, SO_x and NO_x emission during the life cycle of the paper were investigated. It was found that the total amount of CO_2 emissions was increased with the increase in the brightness grade from 57% to 70%. This is attributable to the increase in the amount of pulp sludge incineration derived from a lower yield, and the increased amount of chemicals used. 35%-37% of CO_2, 43%-68% of SO_x and 88%-90% of NO_x emissions orginated from electric power and steam generation. It was suggested that the most effective method for decreasing the environmental load is to improve the energy efficiency in the papermaking industry.
